Dr. Dana Smart, OD, HBSc
Born and raised in Guelph, I was interested in two things from a young age: art and science. Among my countless creations in grade school, one recurrent theme emerged; I was obsessed with drawing eyes! With close family members in health care, I admired their service to the community and aspired to do the same.
My fascination with the visual system blossomed while obtaining my Bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences from Wilfrid Laurier University. Physics, neuroscience and chemistry courses revealed the complexity behind the two-dimensional representations of eyes that had sparked such curiosity as a child. I decided that optometry was the ideal profession for me. As it involves a series of technical measurements based on physical laws, optometry has a hard, cold exterior. This will remain until warmed with genuine human interest. Caring for the visual welfare of the patient in the broadest sense is of equal importance to mastering clinical skills. Science builds a house, art turns it into a home.
I completed my Doctorate of Optometry at the University of Waterloo in 2018, where I was recognized for Excellence in Ocular Pharmacology upon graduation. During this training, I completed an Ocular Disease Externship in Miami with particular emphasis on cataract, diabetes and glaucoma management. I started practicing as a fully-licensed optometrist in Fall 2018 alongside Dr. Alison Laidlaw here in Guelph. As an active member of the Canadian and Ontario Associations of Optometrists, I am passionate about lifelong learning and increasing awareness about eye health within the community.
Outside of the office, I still enjoy creating art, as well spending time with family and friends, petting dogs, sports and cheering on the Raptors.
